Free & Subsidized Treatment

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees basic healthcare as a fundamental right. Explore the government initiatives, funds, and insurance programs designed to provide free or highly subsidized medical care to those who need it most.

Basic Health Services: In addition to the specific programs below, the Government of Nepal provides essential healthcare services and a list of essential medicines completely free of charge at all local Primary Health Care Centers and Health Posts.

National Health Insurance Program (NHIP)

Target: General Public & Vulnerable Groups

Provides health coverage up to NPR 100,000 per family (up to 5 members) per year. Premiums are 100% subsidized for the ultra-poor, senior citizens (70+), severely disabled individuals, and Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs).

Aama Surakshya Programme

Target: Pregnant Women & Mothers

Aimed at reducing maternal mortality, this program provides completely free delivery services at government and participating private hospitals. It also offers cash incentives to mothers for transport and completing antenatal checkups.

Disadvantaged Citizens Medical Fund

Target: Patients with Severe Illnesses

Also known as the Bipanna Nagarik Kosh, this fund covers catastrophic medical expenses for specific severe conditions including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, renal ailments (free hemodialysis), spinal injuries, and sickle cell anemia.

Free Pediatric Cancer Treatment

Target: Children Under 14

A recently implemented government initiative offering free cancer treatment for children under 14 at designated centers including Kanti Children's Hospital, Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, and BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital.
